Jongro BBQ in NYC’s Koreatown has to be one of the most unexpectedly brilliant places to eat in this city. I find ‘KTown’ quite random at the best of times but Jongro BBQ takes the biscuit. Firstly, it’s not the easiest place to find primarily because you pass where Google Maps tells you it is but all you see is a nondescript office building. After passing it for the 4th time, you realise that Jongro is in the office building. You take the unremarkable elevator up expecting never to be seen again but then open the door to a hidden world that, if you didn’t know better, could easily be a bustling Seoul street market. Its crazy.
At that point everything is simple: Grab a booth, order a platter of meats and a load of drinks and watch as your waiter or waitress sparks up a little BBQ in the centre of your table. Then all that’s left is for you to cook it, wrap it in lettuce and devour everything that’s in front of you. It’s a brilliantly social, delicious and unusual experience. What’s more unusually brilliant is when you stagger, smashed, into one of the many karaoke bars in KTown, book a private room and shout your way through a series of classic songs until 4am. Life is good.
